Prepare the palate. Combine ingredients, then marinate until the sumptuous sonic aromas demand attention.

Led by drummer Katie Patterson (Jazz Yorkshire Young Musician of the Year 2012) The Allsorts combine her favourite things – music and food. Fresh and lively, Katie’s compositions range from ‘wild and yet tranquil’ (Lance Liddle) to catchy, toe tapping grooves, to soulful ballads. Wholesome and moreish, The Allsorts take influence from the world around them, channelling life experience into music and of course, stopping for a quick snack along the way! Look out for their debut EP in 2013.

Katie's Factfile:
  • Earliest memory of playing music? Sitting on Grammy's knee while she played the organ in Lower Onslow, NS Canada
  • Favourite kitchen utensil/small appliance? John's Espresso Machine
  • If you wern't a musician, what would you be? Chef
  • Favourite way of eating potatoes? Sliced thin and deep fried - crisps (or chips as I used to know them by)
  • If you could be an animal for a day, what animal would you be? My cat, Pepper
  • First thing you do when you wake up in the morning? Look out the window hoping for sunshine
  • Favourite form of transportation and why? Walking, it's slow and quiet
  • Best gig you've ever been to? Steely Dan @ Montreal Jazz
  • Favorite fashion accessory? Large colourful earrings
  • Weirdest gig you've ever played? Linder Sterling's 'The Darktown Cakewalk', a 13 hour improvised performance piece. Very fun!
  • What is your favorite herb/spice? Fresh Basil

Oli Cadman - Keyboards

Picture
Oli's Factfile:
  • Earliest memory of playing music? Banging on my father's head and singing Fleetwood Mac's I Wanna Be With You Everywhere at the top of my lungs
  • Favourite kitchen utensil? Food Processor (although I don't own one as of yet. Every time I want to make a curry from scratch I always think about the food processor I don't have.)
  • If you wern't a musician, what would you be? I'd most likely be a chef.
  • Favourite way of eating potatoes? Probably roasted in goose/duck fat. Nice and simple. Although there is a lovely way to prepare mashed potato, with warm milk infused with spring onions. Mmm...
  • If you could be an animal for a day, what animal would you be? I'd quite like to be a chameleon; I'm pretty interested in what their eyesight is like considering their eyes move independently.
  • First thing you do when you wake up in the morning? I have a shower, tidy the kitchen/living room, then make a coffee and smoke a cigarette. Every day. Without Fail.
  • Favourite form of transportation and why? I guess it depends on how far I'm being transported. For long journeys, I'd have to be boring and go with the car. I'm still thankful to be able to drive to this day. For shorter journeys, I prefer a skateboard. Every journey is extreme when a skateboard is involved.
  • Best gig you've ever been to? Tigran Hamasayan @ The Howard Assembly Room, Leeds
  • Favorite fashion accessory? A home-made ring which was made for me by a good friend. Just a strip of silver-plated wire bent into two little spirals at each end.
  • Weirdest gig you've ever been to? Probably when I saw Aphex Twin in Manchester a few years ago. Being a bit intoxicated is bad when you have guys wearing contorted baby-face masks up in your face.
  • What is your favorite herb/spice? Herb - Coriander, Spice - Ras-El-Hanout

Jim Faulkner - Guitar

Picture
Jim's Factfile:
  • Earliest memory of playing music? Recording sound on sound with 3 tape players then cutting up the tapes to make weird sound collages. I Must have been 8 or 9 years old.
  • Favourite kitchen utensil/small appliance? Kettle.
  • If you weren't a musician, what would you be? Solicitor or Scientist.
  • Favourite way of eating potatoes? Par Boiled, seasoned then roasted in Goose fat for at least an hour and a half. Delicious!
  • If you could be an animal for a day, what animal would you be? Cat.
  • First thing you do when you wake up in the morning? Wish I could get more sleep.
  • Favourite form of transportation and why? Train: If you can get a window seat and it's quiet with a nice view there's nothing better.
  • Best gig you've ever been to? Can I have two? Tribal Tech at Band on the Wall/Shakti at Birmingham Symphony Hall – Henderson and McLaughlin are both huge influences and heroes of mine and those gigs didn't disappoint.
  • Favorite fashion accessory? Scarf.
  • Weirdest gig you've ever been to? A student trumpet recital from my uni days where someone put a brick on the keys of a tiny keyboard and played over it atonally and aggressively towards the marking tutor. Both hilarious and disturbing at the same time.
  • What is your favorite herb/spice? Fresh Parsley

Russ Henderson - Tenor Saxophone

Picture
Russ' Factfile:
  • Earliest memory of playing music? Trying to work out the themes from Star Wars, Superman, etc. Probably around 6 years old.
  • Favourite kitchen utensil/small appliance? My new bean grinder! So coffees at home are almost as good as the ones you get at an All Sorts rehearsal. Either that or a garlic crusher.
  • If you wern't a musician, what would you be? Trillionaire playboy tycoon.
  • Favourite way of eating potatoes? Hands tied behind my back, blindfolded.
  • If you could be an animal for a day, what animal would you be? A honey badger. Nothing can beat a honey badger and its ferocious defensive capabilities. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPKlryXwmXk
  • First thing you do when you wake up in the morning? Shake off my stupor and continue my meal of puff adder (if you watched the video).    Drink coffee and mutter expletives (if you didn't)
  • Favourite form of transportation and why? My family hatchback with its badass sound system.
  • Best gig you've ever been to?  The Trio (Petter Wettre), Henry's Cellar Bar, Edinburgh c.1999
  • Favorite fashion accessory? Not sure I have any of those, although I do sport large headphones in public (but they're not 'beats' or anything as cool as that)
  • Weirdest gig you've ever played? Inverness Schools Wind Band, switching on of the Christmas Lights, Inverness Castle, c. 1995. Some kid in the audience nearly got obliterated by a stray industrial-strength firework.
  • What is your favorite herb/spice?  Cumin. (Harder to type than I thought though - give it a go - it's like a finger twister)
